Rhonda - my advice would be to get a (competent) vet out to look at that 
mare ASAP!  Why risk your mare at all?  Why prolong the suffering if it 
doesn't have to be like that?

How old is the foal?  I'd be especially concerned if it's a couple months 
old or so - we lost an older mare with a 2 1/2 old foal under similar 
circumstances.  She had a torsion and most importantly, we found out that 
older mares - it seems particularly Arabians - who have foaled a couple 
months before are especially prone to this!

I'd dump that vet, by the way.
