Re: cleaning the barn??
Hi Kriss,
I won't try to trod into the appropriate disinfectants since I
am not familar with the types of microscopic critters happily living in the barn
:-) . But, for your own health, please consider using a dust mask or
better yet, one of the 3M masks intended for painting and such (although they
are a pain to breathe through) when shoveling that old, dusty manure out,
especially if birds (chickens and such) have been living there.
Just some *personal* experience from one who's husband got
pretty sick, no thanks to the pigeons living inside the ducting of the hallowed
halls of UC Davis (oh, it wasn't fun, believe me!) :->
Happy riding,
Kim
BTW: If you have already started shoveling and get some
nasty flu-like symptoms in the near future (constant coughing, stomach churning
and the like) that don't go away on their own, you might want to let your
doctor know about the chicken litter shoveling event.

Subject: RC: cleaning the barn??
Allright ridecampers!! I need some help. Here in
northern Nevada the weather is getting really cold really fast. I just
moved into a new stable with a barn that has housed many chickens and rabbits,
no horses for at least 10 years. I am digging the chicken and rabbit
manure out, and hauling it out to the garden area. MY QUESTION IS: are
there diseases that I should treat the ground for or spray the sides of the
stalls with a disinfectant? I have never had to do this before. I
am going to bring in a couple of truckloads of sand for fresh dirt in
the stalls. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks-Kriss
