ortho-flex crupper needs fixing

I've had something strange happen to my neoprene ortho-flex crupper,
and don't know where to turn for info.  About 3 inches below where 
the clip hooks onto the ring on his rump (under the neoprene) I can
feel a distinct metal lump that sticks into my horse when there is 
tension on the crupper.  What is this?  Is something twisted inside?
Can I fix this without having to take it apart?  (Please say yes!)
I don't know any dealers to ask - any info would be appreciated!
