Deworming horses

This came in from the parasitology dept of our local veterinary hospital.

Hmm, and people wonder why my faith in vets is waning...

>>
>> It is definitely not necessary to deworm your horses every 6 weeks -
>> this is asking for problems as far as anthelmintic resistance is
>> concerned (build up of resistance of the worm to the available
>> deworming remedies). Please take a fresh faecal sample from each
>> horse and send it to me as soon as possible so that we can verify
>> whether the horses are positive or not before deworming again. I will
>> then send you recommendations as well as guidelines to deworming
>> your horses.
>>
>> My husband is a stable manager at an Equestrian centre in Pretoria -
>> we deworm our yard of almost 70 horses every 4 months and have
>> had no problems whatsoever. There are very good remedies available
>> on the market.
>>
>> Please send the faecal samples (keep cool at all times but do not
>> freeze) to: Lynne Michael, Parasitology, Onderstepoort Veterinary
>> Institute, and let me know when to expect them so that we can sort
>> your problem out!
>>

Would love to hear any comments you guys might have.
