The older horse vs youth

After pitting for a friend of mine I have decided to try this 
wonderful sport.  First thing I need is a horse.  I have been
shopping around and have found two prospect they are close in
many ways, but one and that is age.  Can anyone help me decided
is it better (on the hores) to start a young 5 year old vs a
12 year old.
