Re: Warming up...

Hi Carla,
I don't think that the level of training you described in either case would
have anything to do with the likelihood of tying up. That is more related to
metabolic concerns and your feeding regimen would be the thing that you
would want to consider if that is a concern for you. As to the question of
riding your horse every day until the day before the ride, I would think
that you would want to taper off your conditioning the week of the ride and
actually give your horse a day or two off prior to the ride, with just some
light riding to keep the horse limber and exercised if you do not have
turn-out. I try to get a couple of good days in the week of the ride and
then on Wednesday, do a light ride and no riding on Thursday, leaving on
Friday for the trailer ride to ride camp. I try to consider my horse when
conditioning and since I am not a "front of the pack" rider, I don't feel it
is necessary to push my horse beyond good, solid conditioning. That means
that when it is 95 degrees outside, I do not ride. I choose to ride in the
early mornings or late evenings, for my sake as well as the horse's. If I
were conditioning to ride Tevis or competitively at a hot ride, I would
consider that in choosing the weather and times that I conditioned. I try to
be considerate of my horse's comfort while trying to get her to the best
condition for the ride ahead. Sometimes we do have to push beyond her
comfort zone, but I try to up the ante gradually. Hope you get some advice
which seems helpful to you.
Pat
