The operative word *is* "attempt".  I'm sorry to say I saw a few horses at
Tevis whose owners deserved being called up on abuse charges.   Seriously,
walking skeletons, zero adipose tissue.  I think they ran into metabolic
trouble by the time they got to Squaw, which is...what...about nine miles?

Stupid.  Don't ask me why they were allowed to start.
