Re: Bad Backs/Chronic Pain (Riders with...)

Stretching helps. I have a propensity for my muscles, tendons, ligaments to
tighten up to the point where I go out of alignment. My lower back will
hurt, and my shoulder gets really bad (chronic pain & immobilized). I
learned from PT that if I keep limber, my pains go away. I have been to the
point with both my shoulder and back that I have been disabled from chronic
pain for months on end, which seemed weird because I am a very active
person. The problem is
that some muscle groups get overused, and then they throw something
seemingly unrelated out of whack. Now that I know what to do, I have
ways to keep from getting back into the routine of pain.

For my shoulder, sleeping with no pillow loosens up the tendons and
ligaments to my shoulder, and that makes the pain go away and I get full use
of the shoulder back. Weird, huh? The Dr. diagnosed the shoulder as
arthritis, but it's not. It's directly caused by my neck.

For my back, working on loosening my hamstring muscles makes the pain go
away. Also, strengthening my core internal muscles helped my back
tremendously (sit ups, leg lifts, crunches, etc.).

There's a book called the Muscle Memory Method that was instrumental
in helping me find exercises and stretches to help my problems.
