Rabies

In Marin County, Calif., about 20 years ago there was an unfortunate case
of horse rabies. A stallion at a prominent Arab ranch in a very rural
area became violent and ill and was euthanized. Half of the brain was
tested locally...result was "no rabies." Then, a Washington state mare
that had been bred by this stud, came down sick, was euthanized and when
they tested Her brain, it was rabies. Quickly, the other half of the
stud's brain, that was still frozen, was tested by state labs and verdict
this time was positive for rabies.
All hell broke loose, as many people had handled the stud, including the
veterinarian, and all had to receive the old-style rabies shots. All
survived.
Then there were the lawsuits....
So, many of us routinely give our horses rabies booster shots every year.
