Re: Rabies

Dear Dr. Newell;
I would like to know what brand of vaccine you use that you have not had any
reactions. I had all four of my horses vaccinated two years ago and they
ALL developed large, hot, swellings on their necks and were in pain for
weeks. Luckily they required no treatment other than bute for comfort
reasons, but I haven't re-vaccinated since. I am still undecided if the
cause of this was the fact that the vet didn't clean the site on any of the
horses prior to vaccinating them(it was October, they were all coated in the
normal pasture grime and heavy coats...I always practically surgical-scrub
vaccination sites myself) or if it was the vaccine itself. The vet seemed
to think it was the vaccine. I want to protect my animals from harm, but I
do not want to harm them in order to protect them from something they will
have no exposure to.
