And Rio was free...

The cost of a horse is not a predictor of it's ability to win, but it often is an indicator of it's past.  The cost likely indicate the value a seller or buyer puts on the horse.  True, many horses that are well loved are transferred to new owners for free or at low cost but that's because their value is so high there is no price possible for that animal, but we are not talking about those horses, are we?

No, we're talking about gambling.

Anyone who wants to bet on a free/low cost horse (that is, buy it and hope that it will do well in endurance)  is free to do so.  I guarantee the odds are very much against finding very many Rios and Cashes out there.
