RE P&R Timeing an Explanation for Newbies

This is for folks that have had a chance to figure out what is going on at
the P&R checks. As one who has been a hold or P&R timer on many occasions at our
rides here in Kentucky, here is what we do.
The 25's and 50's were treated the same because sometimes the slow 25ers
arrive with the fast 50's. As you enter the P&R area the time is recorded and
you have 10 minutes to get the horses pulse down to what the vet has specified
as his criteria, the horse should be pretty much there when it is brought into
the P&R area. There are pulse timers that can if asked, take a courtesy check
but it's good if you can do this yourself too. Sometimes it's pretty hectic
there. When the pulse is down the Pulse taker will call time and that is
recorded and the horse can then enter the vet check area. If the horse does not
fall within the parameters set by the vet the rider will be asked take the horse
out of the P&R hold area and present again when the horses pulse is down. Your
original entry time is deleted and the new time is logged when you represent. If
refused third time for not meeting criteria the horse is pulled. This is all
part of your hold time and getting into the vet area late does affect the total
ride time. So make sure your horse's pulse is down down before you present him
to the Hold Timer or it will cost you.
