Ah, that's what I call injudicious non-incremental stressor increases (better 
known as SURPRISE!).

Over-training is another thing, as far as exercise science is concerned. It's 
a long term chronic overload of exercise volume and/or intensity which 
eventually leads to adrenal exhaustion, overuse injury, staleness, etc. At 
some point the rebound part of the recovery process fails to kick in and you 
start going downhill instead of improving. Takes a couple months to recover 
from--and then the athlete has to rebuild again.
