Re: RC: questions with foals....

Hi Sylvia
Been busy moving so just came in on the tail end of this, but I do have
to add my two cents here. I raise primarily Russian-bred horses; they
mature REALLY slowly. I tell people to look at them as 1-2 years younger
than they are up until 7 or 8. I sold Halyva Guy to Frank Rothschild at
Red Shield Equestrian 2 years ago as a 5 year old at 15hh; he is now 7
and Frank said he is a good 15.2hh now. It happens. You have to make
sure of the bloodlines before you make any guesses about eventual
height. Pico Nightrider was 15.3 when he went into race training at 4
years; he is now owned by Valerie Kanavy and is an HONEST 16.1hh. I'm
sure she will let you stick him at a ride.
Sheila Varian's lines also mature quite late, as did the 16hh gelding we
purchased from her for Mark.
I do have to laugh, though. When people come to see our Hal, they are
shocked. They really expect to see a horse 15.3 or so--- No one ever
believes us that he is even 16hh, let alone 16.2. I guess everyone is
too used to "Arabian yardsticks!" <bg>
