Re: RC:

Hi Vicki
By now you've probably gotten more advice than you need. This is all I
would add that we do: Braid and wrap tail--- saves a lot of mess
later. Also, if you haven't already done so, you might want to get a
copy
of Dr. Bob Miller's video on foal imprinting which we believe is the
most important thing we do right after the birth (while mom is resting
and before baby gets up--- we do quickly--in and out--- so as to not
interfere with baby's natural bonding to mom). We only assist in birth
to help release shoulder and to tear amniotic sack and pull back from
foal's nose (and frequently just fold back all the way while imprinting)
unless there is a problem. One baby was so big I was at mare's head
giving her "hee-hee-hah" breathing lessons while Mark had both feet on
her butt helping her by pulling hard with every contraction---took every
ounce of strength and Mark is 6'5". Baby wasn't breathing and I gave
mouth to nostril (covered other nostril and mouth) resuscitation. As I
had had garlic pizza that night, foal decided to breath on her own
before my breath did her in.
Now, on top of all this--- don't forget to RELAX, and ENJOY yourself.
Happy Baby!!!

I've learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer it
gets to the end, the faster it goes. Smell the roses!
