called the health department and asked if there was a chance it had
rabies or something. I was a teenager, didn't tell my parents, was just
freaked out by its appearance. They said there hadn't been a case of
rabies in Hamilton County for many many years. A couple of years ago
there was one, but the cat had come up from Florida. By the way, at our
new house, found another barn cat curled up peacefully asleep, dead. Do
you think those could have been snakebites?

Angie, that sounds more like poisoning. Who would poison a cat? Unfortunately
you may be (not you Angie, you the cat owner) the culprit.
Lots of times people put out poison for mice and rats. The rodent eats the
poison but it does not kill immediately, so the rodent walks away. A day or
two later it's staggering around and the cat catches and eats it. Now the cat
dies of the rat poison. I work with wild birds, too, and you'd be horrified
at how many times we've found barn owls killed by rat/mouse poison, not to
mention hawks and kestrels, too.
