Update on Va Trail Bill

I want to thank all of you who took the time to submit a comment to the
patrons of the Bill in our General Assembly for the feasibility study for
constructing a new trail between the Homestead Resort and the Virginia Horse
Center.
The good news is the bill has passed now in both the House and the Senate
(Yeah!).

We had a preliminary meeting last friday to bring together all of the
interested parties regarding this trail and to look at what will happen
next. One of the things that the Senator's aide and a park official brought
up was that they had letters from all over in support of the Bill and that
Del Deeds had received quite a few emails. They were very impressed by the
out of state interest that was generated. So thank you Ridecampers. You
were heard and you were effective.

It looks like this trail will be about 65-70 miles long and may be
completed in two stages. The first stage will complete the trail from the
Homestead into Doughat State Park. This path has already been figured out
by the local riders and should not be hard to bring on line formally in
2000. The second phase is geared to be up by 2004 and involves a greater
section of trail which is complicated by private landowners issues. Right
now it only looks like about 6-10 miles will involve private land and only a
couple of owners. The Virginia Horse Council will be working closely with
the Department of Conservation and Recreation who is charged with completing
the feasibility study.

The neat thing about this trail is that there is a long term possibility of
hooking up a final section to Buena Vista, Va which will enable us to tie
into the horse trail that parallels the Applachian trail until you reach Mt.
Rogers. Probably about 200 miles when you put it all together.

Chair, Virginia Horse Council Trails Committee
