How to use firearm to euthanize

20 or so years ago Western Horseman had instructions for this.  I (knock on
wood) have never had to put down a horse, but I did a dog once.  Make an
imaginary "X" by drawing lines between the ear and the eye on the opposite
side of the head.  Using the largest caliber weapon available, aim for that
spot.  This will put the bullet right through the brain and results in
instant death.

I hope I never have to do an animal again, but it is always better to be
prepared.
