Re: RC: New Foals in Cold Weather

Hi Heidi
I do all that, too; however we have very extreme temp changes. It can be
over 80 in the day and then go down to 40 at night. My foals are all
outside in the fresh air--I'm afraid of that ammonia, too, no matter how
often you clean the stall. What I've found works best for weaning is
that I have all the moms and babies together and then take away one mom
at a time. Seems to work. I haven't had a case of pneumonia in the last
7 yrs but then I foal either earlier than June (unless I have a mare who
has taken forever to get in foal) and I worm full dose for babies with
Ivermectin (10 cc Ivermec for cattle--not the Plus--same as Zymectin
but a whole lot cheaper) every month. Hasn't seem to hurt them and no
one is ever sick. I do that until they are at least 8mos (a year if they
seem small) and then every other month. Any thoughts? Am I over killing
on the wormer? I appreciate your feedback.
Bette
