Re: RC: Working heart rates and recoveries

O.K. ONE hundred miles in 2 weeks makes more sense. :-) I'm not saying
you don't know how to use a heart monitor, I just see so many that give
weird results in some situations and have come to question any weird
results. I suggest that you get her going pretty good, then jump off and
take the pulse with a stethoscope and compare. You still won't come
close to working readings, but maybe you can tell if it's giving you
accurate readings. I used to think that it had to say 265 or some
bizaare reading to be a bad connection, but I rode someone else's horse
and had just "high" readings all day. Turned out the electrode wasn't
even touching him under the girth and I just got readings of 165 when it
was probably 130.

I did have an experience with Kaboot in competition where he was 20 beats
higher when he was the lead horse in a group than when he was the
follower. Have you tried her in different company to see how that
affects her heartrate?

You said she "feels O.K." I just can't imagine that her heart would drop
from above 200 to 64 as quickly as another horse who's running lower.
Granted, all I can base my opinion on is horses that I've ridden. Have
you tried talking to Roger Rittenhouse? He's probably had more heart
monitor discussions than anybody. Maybe he can give you some advice.

Angie
