Re: Ear Twitch on a Mule & giving shots

Way to go Bob. If I even thought of putting an ear twitch on my mule I
would set her training back 6 mos. She does wear a lip chain every now and
then if she is being a brat. I have however, gone dirt skiing behind her
while she had the lip chain on and me on the other end of the rope. I was
not the winner of that contest. I know that you are not the person that
asked about the shots, but just in case she/he is reading this, hear is some
of the things that have worked for me.
Clovis hates shots also, as do most mules. I am a great shot giver, most
horses never even know they got it. Clovis takes it quite personally. To
give her a monthly glucosamine shot I have the needle in one hand and feed
her and scratch her with the other. While she is chewing and enjoying her
scratch , I pop the needle into her chest area. The nice soft muscle at its
lowest spot. Of course she jumps and gets all upset. I just keep on
scratching and pretend nothing happend. Then I attach the syringe. Be
sure to aspirate the syringe to make sure no blood vessels got in the way.
Another thing I do, is put her in hobbles, put a lip chain on her and a
blind fold on her. A mule will rarely kick while blind folded but I still
go for the neck. Another thing I have done is to put her in the trailer and
shoot her through the escape door. ( I dont do this very often though. She
may refuse to go in the trailer. Once in a while works o.k.) Always pet
and scratch give treats and say your sorry. Mules can hold a grudge.
gesa n clovis (don't even think about sticking me with that thing)
