Some distance riding trivia

This is taken from The Wild West magazine, June 1999 in an article titled Death
of a Cattle King by Roxann Spanfelner.

"Leaving the ranch in southeast Oregon on Dec. 26th, 1897, cowboy David Crow
Spurred his horse to a gallop in the bitter cold. He rode relentlessly toward
Winnemucca, Nevada 225 miles away. Crow left the saddle just nine times, each
time to change mounts and reached his destination in 43 hours. Reining his
lathered horse in front of the telegraph office in Winnemucca he croaked through
cracked frozen lips, "Peter French has been murdered!"

I'd say he did go through all those horses going at a gallop or as best he could
the whole way.
Not sure where these places are. French operated owned the 200,000 acre, P
Ranch in southeast Oregon and had a herd of 45,000 cattle.
