I have to say, Gesa, that the chances of the mare being in foal are
inversely related to how much you want the foal.  If it was an
accidental breeding of the neighbor's rank mutt horse to your prized
show mare, and you intensely don't want a foal, of course the mare will
be in foal.  And if you bought a breeding to this year's national
champion, leased a daughter of last year's national champion for
beaucoup bucks and can only have her for one breeding season, then of
course the mare won't be in foal.

I'm sure this information is in all the textbooks, isn't it?  Lif
