Re: RC: Re: Re: Pulling Back

I have a horse that I have owned for 12 years now. When I got him as a 3
year old he had been roughed up pretty good. This horse absolutely refused
to be tied. He was very claustrophobic. So I decided that I would just not
time him. I did everything, shots, wormers, etc. without tying. I always
held him for the farrier or vet. The only time he was tied was when it was
absolutely necessary (like in a trailer and then I did it loose enough so
that a casual movement would not cause him to feel tension). I never gave
this a second thought because I really liked this horse and it was just
"something to live with". After a few years I noticed that he had lost his
fear of tying. He never went back to those frightful ways of pulling back
and falling over, THANK GOD and has been trustworthy ever since. He also had
a dreadful fear of the clippers and spray bottles. All of these phobias also
went by the way side. I never worked with him on them but I guess just the
years of consistent handling cured the problem. He is "steady Eddy" now and
never turns an ear at anything, and hasn't for many years. Needless to say,
all the babies born on my place learn these basic at the very start and then
there are no problems later on.

Lee
Boogie (hey I'm a big boy and I can stand tied anywhere)
Kaci (I'm too lazy to go anywhere anyway)
Bravo (Gee, Mom, please tie me up with my favorite chew toy again)
