wedge pads

Has anyone used wedge pads? If you have, how long did you use them? For
what problems? Were you pleased with the results? I'm on the great farrier
search. I just interviewed a guy who recommended wedge pads for what he
perceives are back problems (I have not noticed lameness, but one horse is
short-strided behind. I plan to get Xrays, but have to wait 'til my trailer
gets here). I don't expect anyone to second guess this shoer--after all,
he's seen the horses, but I'm concerned because I've been told by two vets
that wedge pads tend to crush the heels and put undue pressure on the toes.
On the other hand, that was awhile back and maybe there are newer products.
Anyway, I don't know any better research than how a product stands up to
distance riding.

I did look at the archives, but after paging through a massive number of
posts, I still haven't found anything.
