Actually, there were two correlations.  Horses with low body scores (skinny 
horses) failed more than the average, but tended to do so for metabolic 
reasons.  Horses who weighed more (whether the extra weight was due to higher 
body scores or whether it was due to simply being bigger horses) also failed 
more than the average, but tended to fail due to lameness.  And you are 
correct--the correlations were to the HORSE'S actual weight, not to the ratio 
of rider:horse weight.
