Miles - a modest proposal

While riding with some endurance/competitive ride buddies enjoying our
wonderful fall weather (60 degrees, light breeze and sunny), I had a thought
about carrier miles. It goes something like this.
If one assumes that LD's function is to train and encourage horsepeople to
learn our sport, and then provide an incentive to go on to longer distances,
how about transferring a horse;s LD miles into the endurance mileage program
after the horse has achieved 1000 endurance only miles? At this point the
horse and rider would both have demonstrated that they have "the right
stuff" to be endurance horses.

By the way, this is just a thought and I have emotional attachment to it in
any form whatsoever. Here in UMECRA land, UMECRA keeps and rewards total
horse miles from all distance events (Endurance, LD, and Competitive), so
what the AERC does with miles doesn't affect me very much.
