It seems I am always behind the curve trying to catch up on the subjects, but want to pass along to Barbara who asked about bowed tendons, that my Saddlebred bowed a tendon at 12 or 13, and came back after a year of rest to complete Tevis the next two years. Also, I borrowed a Standardbred from friends one year, who had come off the track because his legs were pretty trashed. He had had a bowed tendon, among other things. He was broken to saddle the year I borrowed him, and finished Tevis; he also was driven a lot by my friends, who were heavy into driving. I guess it depends on how long you are willing to lay the horse up. If you try to hurry the process, there is a much higher risk of failure. Back to the LD thing - I never did 25s when I first started. My first ride was a 50. That was in 1979. Years later, after knee surgery, I rode a few 25s, and what a blast! It was so much fun just to have a good time, not worry about having to be out there all day, but be through at lunch and spend the rest of the day kicking back and drinking beer. (Hear that, Howard?) Racing wasn't an issue for me, I was just enjoying the scenery. More of you should try that sometime. Some of you are so serious, it doesn't sound like riding is fun anymore.
