Re: RC: Does Not Lie Down

Dear Peggy;
In observing my horses, the newest mare would always be standing up when
the others would lay down. She is a very nervous sort, and I felt that
she was not comfortable enough emotionally to lie down, since she would
be vulnerable in that position. My goal with her was to be able to find
her lying down one day and go up to her, having her trust enough to be
able to pet her and put my body all around her and not have her get up.
Sorta like that training where the trainer forces the horse down and
then sits on it, not letting it up. That forceful part would not fly
with her, I think it would probably permanently blow her mind. The day
before yesterday I found her lying down, but when I went out there, she
got up as I approached, even tho the others remained prone and let me
mess with them. But yesterday, I finally did it! She was lying down
again with all the others, and I was able to go up to her, pet and
massage her, even put her fly mask on! She finally is totally relaxed
around me. Took tons of time, but she's coming around. I noticed today
that she has moved up another rung on the pecking order...now she's
right below my alpha mare...and bosses both geldings around. Poor
Blade...he lost his one position of authority.
