Re: nutrition in foundered horse

First of all, why did the horse founder in the first place? Was it that
first fresh green grass of spring? Did he get in the feed bin? Is it
perhaps a case of stress founder? What does your friend currently feed? Is
your farrier perhaps a sales rep for Purina? Without having seen the horse
or determined the cause of the founder, no ONE, farrier or otherwise,
should advise a feeding program. I think that once your friend finds out
what happened in the first place, she should consult a feed nutritionist
through her feed store, her vet and if he comes and takes a look, her
farrier, too.... Also remember that founder is a result of laminitis. Has
this been a one time deal or does this horse have a bout frequently
(chronic condition)? More information is definitely needed and X-rays
would be a darn good idea, too!!
