About three weeks ago, I noticed the "scurfing" on my stallion.  I use a
neoprene girth and had not had any problems with it (we're still doing
pretty low miles though).  Guess what, he was just starting to put on his
winter coat.  The scurfing has since disappeared.  It seemed to have no
relationship to clean girth etc.  We do ride in sand a lot, but we've been
doing that since July and there were no scurfing problems until the coat
change started coming on.
