Angie, I've had the same problem with my horse. Last spring he got that peely, scruffy skin (I think scurfing is a perfect term!) and I thought it was the neoprene girth. I figured it just wasn't right for him. So I switched to a fleece girth and in a week or two, all was fine. The first part of September I started having the same problem again. I didn't know what to think since the fleece girth had been fine all summer. I thought maybe I was cinching it too tight, but loosening it only helped a little. The horse is with a trainer now (since Sept 20), I'll ask him about it (he's in Kentucky, 10 hours away). The spring/fall coat change theory sounds like it really might be the culprit. I'll be anxious to hear ideas on how to handle it!
