Re: Killer Bees

I Have attended several tallks on the subject of Killer bees. The first
thing that was mentioned, is DO NOT wear perfume, or any type of bug spray
with citronella in it thoses things actually attract the bees. That includes
fly spray for the horse!! They have said to even not use soaps that have a
scent when you plan on being out side. Also wear brighter colors. That may
seem weird considering that the bees go for flowers, but the reasoning
behind that is the black and browns actually upset the bees more becaues the
bears that attack the nests for honey are those colors. Also the bees tend
to swarm more and longer in the spring that regular honey bees and you can
hear thei humming form a good distance away. Keep away form those areas.
Also while riding, look for areas that look like they would be good nesting
sites. Any hollow logs, old buildings and junk piles. Especially if they are
near a water source like a pond or cattle Tank. I have been told that the
bees will persue you a lot longer than regular bees and will keep stinging.
Just remember that isf you think you are in an area where they may be then
try not to provoke them and steer clear of any sites that look like good
nest sites. Hope this helps.
