RE: The horse that hit Jim Oury

Barb:

We all know you speak with great authority on this subject, your having been
there and done that.

But I disagree with your conjecture of horses being able to avoid things at
high speed. If this were so there would be many fewer jockeys injuries on
the track and steeplechase riders on the course.

A horse appears to be a self preservationist. With this in mind he will do
what is necessary to remain among the living and uninjured at the expense of
other creatures including man. So, if a collision course is imminent,
especially with a smaller creature (say a person) the horse will do its
utmost to come out the better of the two. This can include turns, jumps and
the like if at all possible. If the evasive maneuvers are not possible then
the smaller object will suffer the most.

No MD or Vet is necessary in this particular instance. The finish route was
not kept clear and the results are those of this oversight. Your comments
will not change things and centering blame will produce no tangible results.

Let's just look at this horse for one second.
Most horses will do anything to avoid a collision.

Even at high speeds, they'll jump something on the
ground, and we all know they can turn on a dime
or do a 180 at just about any speed *IF* they can
see where they're going or not running crazed.

That horse to me wasn't just *racing* to the finish
that horse was running blind.
(And hearing that the horse stepped on his chest after
knocking him down, really drives it home to me that this
horse didn't even know he'd HAD a collision.)

The rider and HORSE should be thoroughly checked out
by an MD & DVM.
