Passing of an Endurance Legend

The Board of Governors of the Western States Trail Foundation are
saddened to announce the passing of one of the original five riders that

started the Western States Trail Ride 100 Mile One Day Ride.

On Saturday, January 23, 1999, Lincoln "Nick" Mansfield rode on ahead
after many years being a friend of The Trail and dedication to the sport

of endurance riding.

Nick was one of the first five men that started out from Tahoe City on
August 7, 1955 for the 1st 100 Miles One Day Ride conducted by the
Western States Trail Ride. Nick went on to complete the Ride a total of

16 time with his last completion in 1980. Nick was also the winner of
the coveted Lloyd Tevis Cup in 1959 on his trusty mount "Buffalo Bill",
a Thoroughbred/Morgan gelding (Buffalo Bill had eleven completions).

Nick was, at the time of his death, a member of the Board of Governors
of the Western States Trail Foundation and has been honored by having
the arena at the Wendell and Inez Robie Park dedicated in his and his
wife's memory.

Viewing will be Saturday, January 30th between 2 and 4 PM at the Reno
Memorial Cremation & Burial Society, 253 East Arroyo (702.322.9200).
Services will be 10AM, Monday, February 1 at Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, 590 Pyramid Way, Sparks, NV.

Persons wanting to remember Nick might consider a contribution to the
Adopt-The-Trail program being conducted by WSTF. Restricted donations
for a section of the World Wide Mile in Nick's name would be
appropriate. Check the WSTF website at http://www.foothill.net/tevis
for information on this program.

We hope to have a full story of Nick's life in the next issue of the
Tevis Forum. Maybe AERC will also do a special article on the life and
times of one of the original riders of the WSTR.

Happy Trails Nick...our hearts are with you.

Respectfully,

Larry Suddjian, Vice President
WESTERN STATES TRAIL FOUNDATION
