accident in Montana (I was there, and I work for Jim Oury)

Mel Sherman chameleon7@aol.com
wow...a friend just told me this was here, I'll have to get registered or something...Okay, I work for Jim, I was at the accident.
You can send cards etc to: Jim Oury, River Ranch, PO box 1827, Hamilton MT 59840
..Jim has a fractured c-5 and c-6 vertabrae, fractured lumbar vertabrae, broken sternum and collapsed lung and edema around his heart. He had surgery today to stabilize his neck and hopefully prevent quadriplegia. Serious accident folks. Jim loves this sport, and he loves Posse ride.
As far as I know litigation is not even a consideration. He just hopes he will be able to ride again, in spite of the limited mobility he will experience as a result of this incident.
Jeff and Darlene Patterson manage Posse ride, this is the ride's third year, and the last thing Jim wants is for this "accident" to hurt an excellent ride. There was talk before I left the ride camp about moving the finish line well away from camp, and stationing a volunteer with a radio to call in the results. That would help the safety factor.
However, the 50 milers who were racing in had over 100 yards of visibility to see the finish area...full of vets, dogs, kids, crews, horses, trailers, and spectators. Admittedly, I have a personal bias, because I respect Jim tremendously as a boss and a horseman. This "accident" was avoidable, and if it had been a kid hit by that horse instead of Jim, it would have ended in tragedy.
