This is a very small issue compared to the flagrant abuse of whipping and
gingering, but the fact that no horse (correct me if I am wrong) can compete
in a recognized horse show unless the feeler hairs on his muzzle have been
shaved (which affects horses the way I would be affected if you took my
glasses away).  The small issue sets the standards for the treatment of
horses.  Naturally, most people in shows don't do the kinds of things the
big trainers do, but the trainers are too often their role models.  Also, at
least in barns I have boarded at, the regular people who show do feel that
the show is more politics than merit in the placings.  Anyway, the long way
around to my point, which is that I don't see anything about distance riding
which STARTS with disadvantaging the horse in the same way that shaving
feeler hairs does.
