And I find it interesting that of all the people who said "sue 'em," not one
appears to be a lawyer.

I really hope that there is no litigation over this.  On the surface, it
doesn't appear that this was anything other than an accident EVEN if the
riders in retrospect could have done something differently. I can also think
of many reasons, having nothing to do with punishment, why the two riders
might give up their placings.

So, I'm with Maggie.  Let's hear the whole story, hopefully even from ride
management before passing any judgments. Take a deep breath and try to
figure out some ways to prevent this from happening.  I like the idea of
taping off the finish, but I know this is already done at many if not most
rides.  Having a person patrol the area is also a good idea. Keep the ideas
coming.  Improving the safety of our sport should be a top priority and this
terrible incident is one more reason for us to look for more means of
improvement.
