Re: RC: RE: Endurance and CTR

Kirsten - the first ride we took Nasrif to we camped away from the
central area, next to people with a gelding Nas liked. We had Nas in a
portable pen, and hung blankets on them to make them appear to be more
of a barrier. One of us stayed with him at all times. During the first
night (before the ride) I actually slept in his pen with him - it really
calmed him down. After the race he was calm on his own! Nevertheless,
during the dinner & awards, we tied him as well as had him in the pen,
and one of us checked on him every few minutes. It was a pain in the
butt at first, but each ride we went to he got better. It took lots of
constant attention to him to get him to the point that he acted just
like an old gelding but was worth it. (By the way, this was a horse who
had lots of show experience - somehow race camping must be a lot
different).

Even when Nas was an old hand at all this, we never could take him to
any kind of a ride and expect him to be calm if we brought one of "his"
mares there. Lif
