Hi Sandy,
His symptoms were that the quarters would break away and before they did the
area of the white line in the quarter area would hollow out.  I was a new,
VERY NERVOUS NELLIE, owner.  Also, everyone said he had very soft hooves.  I
spent millions on DL Methionine, Biotin, a special concoction the vet sold
(iodine, ether, something else), hoof dressings--the works.  True, at the
time he was in a stall 18 to 20 hrs a day, but the truth is:  his feet are
fine, size 2's, he is now barefoot (I don't ride him anymore because he has
ringbone) and roams around the pasture, no problem.  I found out, after
years of worry, that horses' feet are supposed to break at the quarters.
The other two have good feet, but I did come to the conclusion that nothing
helps a horse's hoof like exercise and good shoeing.
