I wanted to share my view on pedigree. Pedigree can be a great reason
to go look at a prospective horse for breeding, but unless the
individual is as good as should be for breeding, you would be better off
with a plainer pedigree on a quality animal.

I went to look at the stallion I own because I knew his sire and really
liked him, and I had met and very much liked his maternal grandsire as
well. So the pedigree was good with stallions who tended to produce good
foals. The sellers had a nice picture of him in action which caught my
eye, and his color suited me. So I was interested enough to go look.
His conformation was especially nice, and his gaits were quite good, and
his temperment was incredibly good. But what got me to buy him was when
I rode him myself and realised that even if I never bred him, even if I
took him home and didn't like what he sired and gelded him, I would
still never part with him because I wanted him as MY saddle horse.<G>

Pedigree can be a place to start, but if anything beyond that doesn't
stack up, I'd pass it up. Anyway, my overpriced $.02 worth.<G>
