Re: proud flesh/wound care

My horse got a cut on his back left cannon (right on the
front, halfway between hock and fetlock) a couple of months
ago. The cut was about 2" long and not too deep. I was
totally paranoid about proudflesh so I took advice from
Heidi Smith for "cuts below the knee or hock". I put
Wonderdust on it (a mild caustic) and wrapped it for a few
days, changing it each day. The Wonderdust made it turn
kind of black but the minor swelling went down in 2 days. I
washed it well with Betadine soap twice a day for about a
week, continuing with the Wonderdust. The hair is nearly
back now, I don't think it's even going to scar. I've never
dealt with proud flesh before (although I've seen it --
ugh!), I'd probably have the vet out to look if I thought
that's what it was.
