Once was in '85 and once was in '95.  I had far less disposable income in '85 
so the gas price issue was very dear, and as for trucks, I have NEVER been 
able to afford a new truck--made my choices years ago to work a bit less, 
forego the glamour of "new," and still have my horses.  My current "new" 
truck is an '85 diesel, and it gets me there and back just as well as a new 
model.  I know a lot of dedicated endurance riders who would far rather pay 
their money in fuel and entry fees than in payments on new trucks--I 
personally have only about $10k invested in the total truck/trailer combo, 
and I even have living quarters!  I know a lot of folks who ride a lot of 
miles and haul with even less "equipment."  That's what's meant by doing it 
on a shoestring....  :-)
