Re: grades steeper than 20%
I just looked this up for my brother a few days ago.
20% grade = 20 inches of rise over 100 inches of distance, which  is also
equal to a 20 foot rise over 100 feet of distance.  Basically it's just good
old rise/distance.
So 100% grade is a 45 degree angle from horizontal (rise and distance are
equal).
