Re: Electrolytes Useage

I have yet a different problem in that there simply isn't any water out
there for Dory to drink. When we go out in the desert for 15-20 km she is
in dry sand and has to wait for a drink. If I ever found some water, I'd
give it for sure. The 50 m race they're planning for Dec or so has provision
for water every 7 1/2 km or so, which I think is wonderful. In our case,
the desert Arabs are used to the situation and will stock up on water as
soon as there's a chance, but we have to watch the electrolytes carefully
especially in the summer. It also limits the time that you can spend out in
the desert without coming back in.

me when you are riding in the heat AND humidity of the East it is a
different ballgame altogether. You cannot "catch up" on the lytes and by
not giving enough during the course of the ride (whether the horse is
drinking or not) you may be setting your horse up for some real problems. I
have ridden hot and humid rides (WEC Dubai and USET Festival in NJ) and if
you do not give the electrolytes, you will be in serious danger of only not
finishing, but causing harm to your horse. I would same both Linda and
Angie are correct - give the lytes and slow down.
