I agree with you on the above statement, but, on the other hand some
people need to practice on knowing if that horse will do what your horse did.
There is nothing wrong with shorter distance until this happens. If your
experienced enough, and she stated it was her first ride, then, shorter
distance and practice would be the safest way to advised her. We surely
don't want someone having a bad experience on their first couple of rides.
Since I deal with nothing but new riders and new horses for a living, I
like to see them both (horse & rider) know what their doing and how to deal
with up coming problems. Safety is my main concern not distance, at least not
at the beginning. I do have some new clients that have the knowledge and we
start them on 50's for there first ride. This is done only after a lot of
lessons, and conditioning here at the ranch. But even so, they have
Trail-Rite escort them the whole way for their first 50 mle ride and this
seems to help a lot.
What I've found out over the years is some people have a feel for
endurance and some people need to read and practice different aspects of this
sport. To the general horse public there is not a lot of information just
out there. So even though, they have had a horse all their life, to
recognize a problem is still new information to them. Just wanted to let you
know why I said what I did.:)
