1. Sometimes this, "just happens," a wrong step, hole, rock, etc. if it 
continues, then he might want to check shoeing on that foot to see if it is 
correct with that legs angles.  Ask him if he changes diagonals while 
trotting.  Maybe the horse is getting off-balanced while trotting.  Most men 
while trotting prefer not to post.  If that is the case then the horse could 
be using one leg more than the other pushing the riders weight up.
2. Ultrasound is the best.  Then you can follow the after treatment to match 
the damage.  Until then, he would be just guessing as to the treatment 
needed.  When injuries happen we would we all would like to keep up 
conditioning, but if that is not whats needed then you do what is good for a 
nice recovery and come back with a strong healthy horse.  What I tell my 
clients is "There's always another ride!"
