I'm taking you at your word that you meant "follow".  When you trot out a
horse, never let him "follow" you.  Stand at his shoulder when you say
"trot" and he should take off when you do.  That way the vet gets a clear
view of the horse, not of the rider jogging along in front of the horse. 
Also, they learn pretty quick that when you're out in front, you can't
reach their rear.  If you train him by putting a long crop or switch in
your left hand, then saying trot and reaching behind with your left hand
and giving him a little swat, he soon learns to get out of there on the
voice command alone.
