Jackie,

Don't fret about the details.  The best way to learn endurance is just do 
it!!  Everytime you go for a training ride or a competition you will learn 
a whole lot.  That is the most important part.  Many people who have been 
doing endurance for a long time don't even know or care about diagonals.  
The most important thing is to just go do it.  Start out going slow with 
the intention of having a good time and you will be successful!!
