Rocky Mountain--South

k s swigart katswig@earthlink.net
On the weekend of August 28-29, we will be having a training ride
in the San Gorgonio Wilderness (about 2 hours east of Los
Angeles)--starting at, in essence, Heartbar Horse Camp (Fish
Creek) and finishing at Angeles Oaks, and riding the 9 peaks
of the 10,000 foot ridge.

The ride is about 35 miles and goes up over all 9 peaks that
exceed 10,000 ft in the San Bernardino Mountains (Highest is San
Gorgonio--11,500). The ride is very rocky, there will probably
be some snow (but it should be pretty minimal). The intent is
to get in some long slow distance see some great views, cover
some rough terrain, and get some good hill training in. So we
will be taking all day to do it (probably about 8 hours--but it
depends on how every body and everybody's horse feels). There
is some, but not a lot of horse water along the trail.

The wilderness permit is limited to 12 in the group, and there is
also a limit to the number of rigs that my parents can move from
the start to the finish--so if you want to bring a driver who would
like to do a little day hiking in/around the area, it would help.
Horse are not allowed to graze in the Wilderness, so we will have
to bring feed for the horses along for ourselves. And the trail
is a bit "edgy" so I am told it is not recommended for
people who are afraid of heights (although we aren't taking Vivian
Creek--which is the real "Nine peaks" ride--since that is REALLY
edgy).

Anybody who would like to join us should contact me:

If the ride fills, those people with somebody to move their
own rig will be given preference; otherwise it will be first-
come-first served.

p.s. This ride will not have any veterinary control and is not
"sponsored" by anybody. It is just a group of people out to
enjoy a trail ride. And if you or your horse gets into trouble
there is NO vehicular access.
